Spring in South Carolina is gorgeous — mild temperatures, blooming dogwoods, longer days. It also means that pest season is shifting into high gear. As temperatures warm, virtually every pest in our region becomes more active, and many begin their most intensive period of reproduction.
A little proactive effort in the spring can make a big difference in how well-protected your home is for the months ahead. Here’s your spring pest control checklist for Lexington, Columbia, and the greater Midlands.
Why Spring Matters for Pest Control in SC
South Carolina’s mild winters mean pests are often active year-round, but spring brings a meaningful acceleration:
- Ant colonies ramp up foraging activity and begin producing swarmers to start new colonies
- Termite swarms most commonly occur in spring — winged reproductives emerging from established colonies nearby
- Mosquito populations begin building as temperatures rise and spring rains create standing water
- Stinging insects begin nest-building from scratch after winter
- Cockroaches increase activity with rising temperatures
Your Spring Pest Control Checklist
Around the Exterior of Your Home
- Walk the foundation — look for cracks, gaps, and any signs of termite mud tubes
- Check the crawl space access for signs of moisture, mold, or pest activity
- Clean gutters — remove winter debris that holds moisture and attracts pests
- Check eaves and soffits for wasp nests beginning to form, and for any damaged sections that could allow pests inside
- Assess mulch and landscaping — pull mulch back from the foundation, trim vegetation away from the home’s exterior
- Walk your yard after spring rains to identify low spots where water pools (prime mosquito breeding sites)
- Inspect outdoor furniture and play equipment for wasp activity — remove small nests early before they grow
- Move any firewood stored against the house at least 20 feet away
Inside Your Home
- Inspect the kitchen — check behind and under appliances for cockroach activity, droppings, and entry points around pipes
- Check under sinks for moisture, droppings, and gnaw marks
- Inspect your pantry and make sure all food items are in airtight containers
- Check window and door screens — replace any damaged ones before mosquito and fly season peaks
- Look for any signs of moisture around windows, in bathrooms, and under sinks
- Check the attic for signs of rodent activity — droppings, nesting material, gnaw marks
- Look for ant trails and entry points in kitchens and bathrooms
Proactive Treatments to Consider This Spring
- Mosquito treatment: Schedule professional treatment before peak season. Monthly service from May through October delivers the best results.
- Perimeter pest control: A professional exterior treatment in spring creates a barrier that reduces pest pressure throughout the warmer months.
- Termite inspection: Spring is termite swarm season. If you don’t have an active termite bond, now is the time to get a professional inspection.
- Flea and tick yard treatment: If you have pets or back up to wooded areas, spring flea and tick treatment is worth considering.
Don’t Wait for Pests to Become a Problem
The most effective — and most cost-efficient — pest control strategy is prevention. Addressing potential issues in spring, before pest populations are at their peak, is almost always easier and less expensive than dealing with an established infestation in summer.
