Summer is just around the corner, which means many of you will be taking vacations, going to camps, and visiting friends and family outside of the Columbia, SC area. No matter where you might be travelling to this summer, one thing that all of these places will have in common is pests! Depending on your location of choice, the local pests you may encounter can vary. However, here is a list of the most common pests that could put a damper on your vacation:
When it comes to traveling, there are a few simple and easy tips to prevent pests of any species no matter where you vacation. Research is the most important thing you can do to ensure your escape is pest-free. Researching your accommodation and reading recent reviews can help prevent any spread of bed bugs. Once you arrive at your accommodation one of the first things you should do is inspect your room for pests. Make sure you check around bed frames, furniture, windows, door frames, bathrooms, kitchens, etc. After finding a satisfactory accommodation, keep your environment clean. Help prevent the likes of rodents, ants, cockroaches, and flies by just simply remembering to keep your living quarters clean. This means throwing away uneaten food, cleaning up any food or drink spillage, emptying trash cans, and wiping down kitchen surfaces.
Also, try looking up some information on the types of pests you could encounter in that area. If you are going somewhere that you know has a heavy presence of mosquitoes, then make sure you bring insect repellent and apply it according to its instructions. It can put such a damper on your trip if you are constantly itching your mosquito bites. Another tip is to talk to your doctor before traveling especially if you are going abroad. Many subtropic areas are prone to insect-borne diseases such as Malaria and Zika. Your doctor may be able to provide specific injections to help prevent these types of diseases.
Some equipment you may want to bring are insect nets. Insect nets are a great way to prevent both flying, crawling and biting insects from putting a downer on your travels. If you are traveling to a place where the risk of vector diseases is high, make sure both windows and your bed come with a fitted insect net. Lastly, avoiding going outside certain times of the day can really help contribute to a pest-free vacation. Stinging insects are active during the day, while mosquitoes are primarily active at dawn and dusk. Do some research to see what types of insects might be out during the day so you can help avoid them.
