SERVICE REQUEST

One of the most common questions we hear from homeowners in Lexington and Columbia is some version of: “How often do I really need pest control service?” It’s a fair question, and the honest answer is: it depends — but in South Carolina, more often than most people think.

Why South Carolina Requires More Frequent Service

If you moved here from a northern state, you may have thought of pest control as a seasonal thing — something you need in spring and summer, but not so much in the cold months. South Carolina doesn’t work that way.

Our mild winters mean that many pest species — cockroaches, ants, rodents, and some spiders — remain active year-round. There’s no hard freeze that resets the pest pressure. That’s why most pest control professionals in our area recommend year-round service plans rather than one-time seasonal treatments.

The Standard Recommendation: Quarterly Service

For most South Carolina homeowners, quarterly pest control service — four visits per year, one every three months — is the industry standard and our most commonly recommended approach. Here’s what each season looks like:

  • Spring: As temperatures warm, ants, cockroaches, mosquitoes, and other pests become more active and begin moving toward food and water sources indoors.
  • Summer: Peak pest season. Maximum activity from virtually every pest species.
  • Fall: Rodents, cockroaches, and other pests begin seeking warmth as temperatures drop. Exclusion work is especially important this time of year.
  • Winter: Even in mild SC winters, cockroaches, rodents, and some ant species remain active inside homes. Maintaining a chemical barrier matters.

Quarterly service maintains a consistent protective barrier throughout the year — far more effective than treating reactively when you already have a problem.

When Monthly or Bi-Monthly Service Makes Sense

  • Active infestations: Monthly visits during the elimination phase are often needed
  • Commercial properties: Restaurants, warehouses, and healthcare facilities typically need more frequent service due to higher risk
  • Homes in high-risk areas: If your home backs up to wooded land or has a history of serious pest issues, bi-monthly service may be appropriate
  • Mosquito season: Monthly treatment from May through October delivers the best results for mosquito control

One-Time Treatments vs. Ongoing Service

One-time treatments can knock down a current infestation, but they don’t provide lasting protection. Pesticide residues break down over time, and without regular reapplication, the barrier around your home disappears.

Ongoing service plans maintain a continuous protective barrier, include regular inspections that catch new problems early, and typically include a guarantee — if pests return between visits, we come back at no additional charge. They’re also more cost-effective per visit than repeated one-time treatments.

What to Expect at a Regular Service Visit

At Econ-O-Bug, a routine quarterly service visit includes an interior inspection checking for signs of pest activity, exterior perimeter treatment, interior spot treatment of any active areas, and a quick rundown of what we found and what we treated. Visits are efficient — typically 30–60 minutes for most homes — and you don’t need to be home for exterior-only visits.
